Episode 19 Sarah Flocken
On Improv, Novels & Communicating for a Living in the Age of AI
Sarah is an upmarket fiction author, with a debut novel going out on submission soon. She is also a public relations professional, comedian, improviser, and pun contest host (yes, it’s a thing).
As Founder & Chief Human of SLH Communications, a San Diego-based public relations business with nationwide reach, Sarah has written millions of words for other people and been paid to tell them how, when, and where to talk about themselves. “SLH” stands for “sound like a human,” and that is precisely what she aims to help every client do. Her professional achievements have been recognized multiple times by organizations including the Public Relations Society of America, the San Diego Press Club, the San Diego Business Journal, and more.
Outside of her day job, Sarah has written short plays, sketch comedy and stand-up routines for over 10 years, including a run with the Edinburgh Revue at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Additionally, she is a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association. She currently performs with two improv comedy groups in San Diego, and hosts Pundemonium! San Diego’s Only Pun Competition. Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in English and Comparative Literary Studies from Occidental College in Los Angeles, and a master’s in Literature & Modernity: 1900-Present from the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland.
